New Jersey Medicaid: Attending physician NPI requirement

Claims without valid attending physician NPI may be denied starting Jan. 1, 2023

Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan will require that all facility claims must be submitted with a valid attending physician National Provider Identifier (NPI) billed on New Jersey FamilyCare (Medicaid) claims.

To be valid, the NPI must:

  • Be different from that of the billing/servicing provider
  • Not be blank
  • Not be equal to zeros

Claims not billed with a valid attending physician NPI will be subject to denial. Additional information regarding denials can be found on our claims, billing and payments page.
