Coding tips for KED quality measure

Kidney Health Evaluation for Patients with Diabetes (KED) measure best practices

The KED quality measure was developed by the NCQA and the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) to improve kidney disease testing in people with diabetes.

In 2022, the NCQA retired the Comprehensive Diabetes Care measure – Medical Attention for Nephropathy (CDC) and replaced it with KED. The previous CPT® code 82044 was removed from the NCQA HEDIS® set and was replaced with quantitative methods using CPT 82043. Please use the NCQA updated coding to actively reflect care rendered.

KED best practices

The measure is defined as the percentage of patients ages 18-85 with diabetes (type 1 and 2) who received kidney health evaluation with both of the following tests:

  • Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)
  • Urine albumin-creatine ratio (uACR)

Continue ordering tests necessary for your patients’ care, but only the following codes will close an open KED care opportunity.

eGFR + 1 of the urine lab options Option 1: uACR OR Option 2: Urine creatinine and quantitative urine albumin

Blood or serum lab

Commonly part of the Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

Urine lab

May appear alone on lab report or in addition to urine creatinine and urine albumin results used to calculate this ratio

Urine lab

These 2 may appear on the lab report without a uACR result or in addition to the uACR result

Cannot be more than 4 days apart
