January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month

December 2023

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month. It serves as a reminder to educate, inform and encourage regular eye exams to prevent the irreversible damage caused by glaucoma. A concerning part of glaucoma is that it typically progresses without symptoms, and many don’t realize they have the condition until it has caused significant vision loss. Over time, untreated glaucoma can result in blindness.

As an eye-care provider, you have the chance to make a difference in the fight against glaucoma. Here are some ways to help patients during Glaucoma Awareness Month and throughout the year:

  • Education – Talk with patients about the risk factors of glaucoma, especially for those with a family history of the disease
  • Early detection – Emphasize the importance of routine eye exams for early detection and quick intervention
  • Management – Stay updated on the latest treatment options and guidelines for managing glaucoma. Take our free COPE-accredited CE course, What’s New in Glaucoma Management, to learn about new approaches to the management of the disease.

Glaucoma Awareness Month is an opportunity for you to ensure your patients understand what glaucoma is, its risk factors, and the significance of early detection. By taking an active role in promoting eye health and regular eye exams, you can help prevent your patients from suffering from the devastating effects of glaucoma.

Oklahoma providers: You can get information and access CE courses directly from The Oklahoma Optometric Board.
