May is Healthy Vision Month

Healthy Vision Month is a great time to discuss the importance of maintaining good eye health with your patients.

Why vision health matters

Remind your patients that early detection and treatment of eye conditions can help prevent vision loss and improve their quality of life. Regular eye exams can also help detect underlying health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure and even some cancers.

Key tips

  • Encourage regular eye exams: Regular comprehensive eye exams are essential for detecting vision problems and eye diseases at their earliest stages. Encourage your patients to schedule annual eye exams, regardless of whether they currently wear glasses or contacts.
  • Educate about eye health: Provide information on how to protect their eyes from harmful UV rays, the importance of maintaining a healthy diet and the benefits of wearing protective eyewear during activities that could pose a risk to their eyes
  • Screen for common eye conditions: Help patients stay vigilant for symptoms of common eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration. Early detection and treatment can significantly impact the prognosis for these conditions.
  • Promote healthy lifestyle choices: Encourage patients to adopt lifestyle habits that support eye health. This includes quitting smoking, managing chronic conditions like diabetes and following the 20-20-20 rule to reduce digital eye strain (every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away).

Healthy Vision Month is a wonderful opportunity to bring attention to the importance of eye health. Take the opportunity to use this month to reinforce the significance of regular eye exams and healthy lifestyle choices in promoting optimal eye health.
