Massachusetts: Area of Expertise (AOE) updates required

Last modified: July 29, 2021

To help ensure patients have detailed information about in-network health care options, all Massachusetts health care professionals who see UnitedHealthcare Community Plan patients are asked to update their Area of Expertise (AOE) designations by Aug. 30, 2021.

Area of Expertise differs from specialty and clinical focus

These updates identify your unique experience, training and certifications with certain patients, procedures and treatment methods. The UnitedHealthcare Area of Expertise indicator list encompasses more than 20 options, including:

  • Blindness or Visually Impaired (BVI)
  • Chronic Illness (CIL)
  • Co-Occurring Disorders (CODT)
  • Developmentally Disabled (DD)
  • Hearing Impaired Populations (HIMP)
  • Homelessness (HLC)
  • HIV/AIDS (HV)
  • Medication Assisted Treatment – Buprenorphine (MAT1)
  • Medication Assisted Treatment – Methadone (MAT2)
  • Medication Assisted Treatment – Naltrexone (MAT3)
  • Physical Disabilities (PDB)
  • Serious Mental Illness (SMI)

Why these one-time updates to Area of Expertise matter

Patients want transparency, choice and the highest level of care based on their unique needs and preferences. Health care professionals want to build and maintain a thriving practice.
