Interoperability Protocol Clarification

Last modified: June 26, 2020

In the April 2020 Network Bulletin, we provided notice of a new protocol for interoperability of Electronic Health Records (EHR). The notice stated that effective July 1, 2020, participating providers will be required to communicate with UnitedHealthcare using HL7 standards within the providers’ Electronic Health Record (EHR) workflow.  UnitedHealthcare would like to clarify the following:

  • While the protocol is effective July 1, 2020, participating providers are not required to take any specific action on that date.  UnitedHealthcare is reaching out to participating providers to work collaboratively on interoperability initiatives that will be supported by the protocol. UnitedHealthcare will reach out via phone or email to develop these capabilities.
  • Action by participating providers will be in accordance with that collaborative process. For example, UnitedHealthcare and participating providers will work together to create clinical data exchange and integration plans.
  • Participating providers who have already established a clinical data exchange and integration plan will continue to follow that plan.
