As smart frames – eyewear with integrated technology such as audio, connectivity or other wearable features – become more common, we want to ensure their use is accurately tracked by including the appropriate modifier on claims.
When billing for smart frames, include the SM modifier with your claim. This supports better visibility into utilization trends and may inform future program enhancements.
The SM modifier can be submitted on claims sent via paper or EDI. It is not available when submitting claims through spectera.com, as there is no field for modifiers at this time.
