New York Medicaid: New postpartum home visit rules

Effective immediately, primary maternity care providers and birthing hospitals must offer and arrange the initial postpartum home visit for all postpartum UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of New York members to comply with state requirements.

This provides an opportunity to evaluate the health of the parent and newborn, support recovery after delivery, offer breastfeeding and nutrition education, discuss family planning, provide parenting resources and coordinate referrals to providers or care management services as needed.

Postpartum home visit requirement details

Birthing hospitals will need to coordinate and schedule the first home visit before the member is discharged. All postpartum members are presumed eligible for 1 initial home visit after delivery.

Depending on clinical, obstetrical or psychosocial needs, additional visits may be covered when medical necessity criteria are met.
