To help reduce administrative burden for network health care professionals, we’re removing referral requirements for most specialties, effective immediately. This change applies to UnitedHealthcare Community Plan members in New York.

Updated referral requirements

Members will only need a referral from their primary care provider (PCP) to see health care professionals in the following specialty categories:

  • Allergy and immunology
  • Dermatology
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • General surgery
  • Neurological surgery
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Otolaryngology
  • Physical medicine and rehabilitation/physiatry
  • Plastic surgery
  • Podiatry
  • Pulmonary medicine
  • Sports medicine
  • Urology
  • Vascular surgery

Referrals will no longer be required for all other specialty types.
