Georgia: Changes to the state’s weight management program

Effective Oct. 1, 2026, participation in the state of Georgia’s 9amHealth weight management program is optional for members. Previously, the state required members to participate in the program to receive coverage for FDA-approved weight-loss medications. Members can now also choose the prescriber of their choice for obtaining their weight loss prescription.

Prescribing weight-loss medications

Only 9amHealth physicians are allowed to write prescriptions for weight-loss drugs without prior authorization. All other prescribers must obtain prior authorization for the medication to be covered under the benefit plan.
