Ohio Medicaid: Change to doula coordination of benefits

The Ohio Department of Medicaid recently announced that commercial plans are now covering doula services, which requires Medicaid to be the “payer of last resort.” This means the member’s primary insurance will pay for services first, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Ohio will only pay for remaining costs. This will take effect July 1, 2026, for UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Ohio.

If you have patients with dual insurance coverage, ask them to present their primary and Medicaid ID cards at each visit. This helps ensure you bill for the service correctly and get paid by either or both plans.
