New: Same-day payments for some commercial claims

How to identify real-time payments for reconciliation

Effective immediately, some of your commercial claims payments may be made instantly, without the 3- to 5-day waiting period associated with standard ACH payments. These real-time payments will immediately be deposited into your bank account, and the remittance data, including 835 files, will be routed through your clearinghouse to your tax identification number (TIN).

What you need to do

While there’s nothing you need to do to initiate real-time payments for eligible commercial claims, you may need to coordinate payment reconciliation with the following service providers:

  • Ask your financial institutions if additional reporting services are required to access remittance information
  • Contact your bank representative to have real-time payment codes added to your transaction reports
  • Consult with your Epic account manager to understand how real-time payments will display on cash management reporting tools

Identifying real-time payment transactions

The codes that identify instant or real-time payments made to your account depend on the type of report:

  • Bank extended remittance detail report: BAI codes 158, 159 and 399
  • ISO and SWIFT bank reporting tools: PMNT, RRCT, DMCT or TRF
  • Bank lockbox service report: BAI code 399

Real-time payments

  • Are applicable only to eligible commercial claim payments
  • Are paid to your TIN
  • Do not alter contracted or state-mandated payment timelines

How to access remittance data

Once the payment is applied to your TIN, the payment code and amount will be displayed in the following:

  • Clearing house EDI 835 files
  • UnitedHealthcare Provider Portal
    • Sign in to the portal from any page on UHCprovider.com with your One Healthcare ID. If you don’t have a One Healthcare ID, register now.
    • You can access the payment information in Document Library
      • From the top menu, select Documents & Reporting
        • Choose Document Library
          • Select either of these folders for the provider remittance advice (PRA) notices
            • Provider Payment Documents
            • 835 Files
    • If you’ve already found the claim, you may also be able to access associated PRA and claim information in the Documents section on the Claims Summary Page

Real-time payments are not processed through Optum and will not appear on the Optum Pay site.

How to reconcile real-time payments

Process real-time payments the same as any other electronic payment. The only difference is the same-day speed at which they’re credited to your account.
