In 2019, we retired certain fax numbers used for medical prior authorization requests in order to migrate to more efficient electronic processes. Where required by law, we maintain the option to fax prior authorization requests. Even in those cases, you have the option to use electronic submission methods.
For most plans, please use the Prior Authorization and Notification tool in the UnitedHealthcare Provider Portal. If you’re unable to use the portal, call Provider Services at 877‐842‐3210 to submit a request by phone. Fax numbers are only available for the commercial plans listed below:
In the last quarter of 2020, we retired fax numbers used for admission notifications and ask that you use the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) 278N transaction or the Prior Authorization and Notification tool in the UnitedHealthcare Provider Portal instead of fax. For more information, see UHCprovider.com/admit.
UnitedHealthcare offers two efficient electronic methods to submit admission notifications. The electronic data interchange (EDI) HIPAA 278N transaction can be sent directly to UnitedHealthcare or through a clearinghouse in either batch or real-time format, which can result in fewer late notifications and reimbursement penalties. If your facility doesn’t use EDI, our online Prior Authorization and Notification tool in the portal is a great alternative. If you’re unable to use those tools, call Provider Services at 877‐842‐3210 to submit a notification by phone.
